Weather Make-up Days
Communication to Families about missed school days due to inclement weather
As you know, Lynden Schools were closed February 6-10 due to extreme weather related issues and if you remember we also had previously missed a day on December 12th, bringing our total missed days for the 2016/17 school year to 6.
Washington School Districts are required to hold school for 180 days each year. Therefore, we are required to make up the missed days or submit a request to the State that missed days be waived due to emergency circumstances beyond our control.
At the February 15th Board Meeting, the Lynden School District Board of Directors discussed a variety of options to make up missed days.
Eventually it was decided to use the make up days set aside for this purpose on the 2016/17 school year calendar (June 16, 19, and 20), change the April 10 teacher work day (non student day) to a school day for students, and submit a request to the State to waive 2 student school days. By doing this, the regular school year is extended by only three days and will now end on Tuesday, June 20.
These adjustments will make it possible to maintain the integrity of the 2016/17 calendar, keep graduation on its schedule date (June 9), and not have to extend school in June any further than necessary. This does create some issues for our seniors who will have to make up some time after graduation or in some other flexible manner as they are only allowed to be released from school 5 days prior to the end of the school year. However, making up some time is preferable to changing graduation and the associated impacts on families who have already made plans.
We hope we are done with the extreme winter weather and are looking forward to a warm and sunny spring.
